on/off (2)

​​​A. Verb + on = continue doing something
drive on / walk on / play on = continue walking/ driving/ playing, etc.
• Should we stop at this express rest area or should we drive on to the next one?

go on = continue
• The candle rally went on until 12 o'clock at night.

go on doing something = continue doing somethingsn
• He can't go on spending money like that. He'll have nothing left soon.

Also go on with something
• Don't let me disturb you. Please go on with what you were doing.

keep on doing something = do it continually or repeatedly
• He keeps on loving her. It's amazing.

drag on = continue for too long
• Let's book a ticket now. I don't want this problem to drag on.

hold on / hang on = wait
• (on the phone) Hold on a minute. I'll see if Sofia is home.

move on = start a new activity, start talking about a new topic
• (in a lecture) That's enough about the political situation. Let's move on to the economy.

take on a job / extra work / a responsibility = accept it and do what is necessary
• When Sofia was sick, he took on her work at the office.

doze off / drop off / nod off = fall asleep
• The lecture wasn't very interesting. In tact, I dozed off in the middle of it.

drop somebody / something off = take to a place by car and leave there
• He drops his children off at school before he goes to work every morning.

go off = explode
• A bomb went off in a hotel downtown, but fortunately nobody was hurt.

Also an alarm can go off (= ring)

lay someone off = stop employing someone because there isn't enough work
• He was laid off two months ago and still hasn't found another job.

rip somebody off = cheat somebody (informal)
• Did you really pay $10,000 for that TV? I think you were ripped off. (= you paid too much)

show off = try to impress people with your ability, your knowledge, etc.
• Look at that man in the super car with sunglasses. He's just showing off.

tell somebody off = speak angrily to somebody because they did something wrong
• Sofia's mother told her off for going to Spain alone.
