Unless/ As long as/ Provided/providing
A. Unless
Study this example situation:
The club is for members only.
You can't go in unless you are a member.
This means:
You can't go in except if you are a member or
You can go in only if you are a member.
Unless = except if.
I'll see you next month unless I have to work late. (= except if I have to work late)
There are few buses to the forest. Unless you have a car, it's difficult to get there.
"Should I tell your mother about me?" "Not unless she asks you."
(= only if she asks you)
We can take a bus to Gyeongju - unless you'd prefer to take a train.
(= except if you'd prefer to take a train)
unless대신 if... not이 자주 사용됨:
Unless I leave now, I'll be late. or If I don't leave now, I'll...
B. As long as, etc.
as long as or so long as
provided (that) or providing (that)
All these expressions mean "if" or "on condition that."
You can borrow my car as long as you promise not to drove too fast.
(= you can borrow my car as long as you promise not to drive too fast - this is a condition)
Providing (that) the room is clean, I don't care which hotel we stay at.
(= the room must be clean - otherwise, I don't care)
C. 미래에 대해 얘기할 때 unless/ as long as/ so long as/ provided/ providing 뒤에 will 사용하지 않음. 현재시제 사용:
I'm not going out unless it stops raining. (not unless it will stop)
Providing the weather is good, we're going to run in Gyeongju. (not providing the weather will be good)
