Introduction

​​A. 다음의 단어들을 동사와 종종 사용한다.
in on up away around about over by
out off down back through along forward

look out/ get on/ take off/ run away 등으로 말할 수 있다. 이것들이 phrasal verbs이다.

움직임의 동사와 on/ off/ out등을 종종 사용한다.
get on • The subway to city hall was full. I couldn't get on.
drive off • A woman got into the car and drove off.
come back • Sofia is leaving today and coming back on Friday.
turn around • When she toughed her on the shoulder, she turned around.

그러나 종종 두번째 단어 on/ off/ out, etc. 가 특별한 의미를 동사에게 준다.
break down • Sorry, I'm late. The bus broke down. (= the engine stopped working)
take off • It was her first flight. She was nervous as the plane took off. (= went into the air)
run out • We don't have any more food. We ran out. (= used it all)
get along • My sister and I get along well. (= are friendly with each other)
get by • Her Spanish isn't very fluent, but it's enough to get by. (= manage)

​​​B. 때로 phrasal verb는 전치사가 뒤에 오기도 한다.
run away from • Why did he run away from her?
keep up with • You're studying too hard. Others can't keep up with you.
look up at • We looked up at the plane as it flew above us.
look forward to • Are you looking forward to the vacation after the exam?
get along with • Do you get along with your boss?

​​​​C. 때로 phrasal verb는 목적어를 가진다. 목적어에 개해 두가지 가능한 위치가 있다.
I turned on the light. or I turned the light on.

만약 목적어가 대명사(it/ them/ me/ him, etc)일 경우, 하나의 위치만 가능하다.
I turned it on. (not I turned on it)

• Could you fill out this form?
fill this form out?
but They gave me a form and told me to fill it out. (not fill out it)

• Don't throw away this ball.
throw this ball away.
but I want to keep this ball, so don't throw it away. (not throw away it)

• I'm going to take off my shoes.
take my shoes off.
but These shoes are uncomfortable. I'm going to take off. (not take off them)

• Don't wake up the baby.
wake the baby up.
but The baby is asleep. Don't wake him up. (not wake up him)
