UNIT119
On time and in time
At the end
and in the end

A. On time and in time
On time= punctual, not late. 시간이 딱 맞는, 늦지 않는.
If something happens on time, it happens at the time that was planned:
뭔가가 on time에 일어났다면 그것은 계획된 그 시간에 일어났다는 것:
The 15:10 bus left on time. (= it left at 15:10)
"I'll meet you at 18:00." "OK. but please be on time." (= don't be late, be there at 18:00)

The opposite of on time is late:
Be on time. Don't be late.

In time (for something/ to do something) = soon enough:
Will you be home in time for dinner? (= soon enough for dinner)
I've sent Sofia a 200 days anniversary present. I hope it arrives in time(for 200 days anniversary). (= on or before anniversary)
I'm in a hurry. I want to be home in time to see Bogeomi on TV. (= soon enough to see Bogeomi)

The opposite of in time is too late:
I got home too late too see Bogeomi on TV.

just in time도 말할 수 있다. (= almost too late):

A child ran into the street in front of the car - I managed to stop just in time.

B. At the end and in the end
At the end (of something) = at the time when something ends. For example:
at the end of the month/ at the end of January/ at the end of the game
at the end of the movie/ at the end of the course/ at the end of the concert

I'm going away at the end of the December/ at the end of the month.
At the end of the concert, there was great applause.
The players shook hands at the end of the game.

"in the end of..."는 쓸 수 없다. 그러므로 "in the end of December"나 "in the end of the concert."도 사용할 수 없다.

The opposite of at the end (of...) is at the beginning (of...):
I'm going away at the beginning of December. (not in the beginning)

In the end= finally
어떤 상황의 마지막 결과가 무엇인지 얘기할 때 in the end 사용:
He had a lot of problems with his car. He sold it in the end. (= finally he sold it)
The professor got angrier and angrier. In the end she just ran out of the room.
Sofia couldn't decide where to go on vacation. She went to Pusan in the end. (not at the end)

The opposite of in the end is usually at first:
At first we didn't get along very well, but in the end we became good friends.
