Adjectives and Adverbs 1
(quick/ quickly)
A. 다음의 예를 보라.
Our summer vacation was too short - the time passed very quickly.
Ice water was amazingly cool.
Quickly와 amazingly는 부사이다. 많은 부사들이 형용사+-ly(an adjective + -ly)의 형태로 구성된다.
adjective: quick serious careful quiet heavy bad
adverb: quickly seriously carefully quietly heavily badly
-ly로 끝나는 모든 단어들이 부사인 것은 아니다. 어떤 형용사들은 -ly로 끝나기도 한다. 예를 들면:
friendly lively elderly lonely silly lovely
B. Adjective or adverb? 형용사나 부사냐
형용사 Adjective (quick/ careful, etc.)는 명사(a noun- 누군가 또는 무엇인가)에 대해 우리에게 말해준다. 명사 앞에 형용사를 사용:
Sofia will be a careful nurse. (not a carefully nurse)
I could lift her up because she isn't a heavy girl.
부사 Adverbs (quickly/ carefully, etc.)는 동사(a verb- 누군가가 어떻게 무엇인가를 하는지 또는 무슨 일이 어떻게 일어났는지):
Sofia look after a patient carefully.
I don't like go out when it is raining heavily. (not raining heavy)
Compare:
She speaks perfect Spanish.
adjective + noun
She speaks Spanish perfectly.
verb + noun + adverb
우리는 형용사를 동사 뒤에 사용하기도 한다. be, look/feel/ sound 등이 그러하다.
Please be quiet.
She was happy that her exam result was very good.
Why do you always look so happy?
I feel great.
Please speak quietly.
He was unhappy that he did so badly on the exam. (not did so bad)
Why do you never take me seriously?
The baby dogs were playing happily.
C. 형용사와 다른 부사 앞에 부사를 사용하기도 한다. 예를 들면:
reasonably cheap (adverb + adjective)
amazingly good (adverb + adjective)
incredibly quickly (adverb+ adverb)
It was reasonably cheap hotel, and the bed was extremely clean.
Sofia learns Spanish incredibly quickly.
과거분사(a past participle) 앞에 부사를 사용할 수 있다. (injured/ organized/ written, etc.):
The new task force team was very quickly organized.
Two drivers were seriously injured in the traffic accident. (not serious injured)
