Adjectives and Adverbs 2
(well/fast/late, hard/hardly)


A. ​Good/well
Good은 형용사이고 ​well은 부사:
Your Spanish is ​good.
You speak Spanish ​well.

우리는 ​well을 과거분사(past participles)와 함께 사용한다. (​dressed/known, etc.)
​well dressed, well known, well educated, well paid
Sofia's mother is a ​well dressed ​woman.

​well이 "In good health", 건강이 좋은 상태라는 것을 의미할 때는 형용사이다.
"How are you today?" "I'm very ​well, thanks."

B. ​Fast/ hard/ late
형용사와 부사 둘 다로 사용된다.
Adjective
Sofia is a ​fast learner.
Ace is a ​hard worker.
He was ​late.

Adverb
Sofia can ​learn very ​fast.
Ace ​workshard. (not works hardly)
I ​got up late this morning.

Lately= recently:
Have you seen the cat ​lately?

C. ​Hardly
Hardly= very little, almost not. 아주 조금, 거의 X
The woman Jang met wasn't very friendly at the blind date. She ​hardly spoke to him.
(=she spoke to him very little, almost not at all)

Hard and ​hardly are different. Compare:
He tried ​hard to find a job, but he had no luck. (= he tried a lot, with a lot of effort)
I'm not surprised he didn't find a job. He ​hardly tried to find one. (= he tried very little)

​Hardly+ any/ anybody/ anyone/ anything/ anywhere 로도 사용할 수 있다.
"How much money have we got?"
"​Hardly any." (=very little, almost none)
The results of the test were very bad. ​Hardly anybody in the class passed. (=very few students passed)

She said ​hardly anything. She ​hardly said ​anything. 둘 다 사용가능

I ​can hardly do something = it's very difficult for me, almost impossible:
My eyes were hurting me. I ​could hardly read a book.

​Hardly ever= almost never:
I'm nearly always at a library in these days. I ​hardly ever go out.

Hardly​는 또한 "certainly not"의 의미도 가지고 있다.
It's ​hardly surprising that you're tired. You haven't slept enough for four days because of nursing practice. (=it's certainly not surprising)
The situation is serious, but it's ​hardly a crisis. (=it's certainly not a crisis)
