​​​A. Study this example situation:
Last year Sofia spent her vacation in Gyeongju. It rained a lot, but she had good time.

You can say:
​Although it rained a lot, she had a good time. (= It rained a lot, but she...)
or
​In spite of } the rain, she had a good time.
​Despite }

​​​B. ​Although 뒤에 주어+동사를 쓴다:
​Although ​it rained a lot, we enjoyed our vacation in Gyeongju.
I didn't get the job ​although I was well qualified.

​Although와 ​because의 의미를 비교해보라:
We went out to see Anapji pond in Gyeonju ​although it was raining.
We didn't go out at late night because it was raining.

​​​C. ​i​n spite of 또는 ​despite뒤에는 명사와 대명사, 또는 -ing형태를 쓴다:
​In spite of the rain, we enjoyed our vacation.
I didn't get the job ​in spite of being well qualified.
​In spite of what you said last night, you are still beautiful.

​Despite는 ​in spite of와 같다. ​despite는 of가 없음.
She had a foot ache, but ​despite this she went to work. (not despite of this)

​in spite of the fact (that)... ​and despite of the fact (that)...으로 말할 수 있다.
I didn't get the job ​in spite of the fact (that) I was well qualified.

​in spite of와 ​because of의 비교:
We went out ​in spite of ​the rain. (or... ​despite ​the rain)
We didn't go out ​because of the rain.

​​​D. ​although와 ​in spite of/ despite의 비교:
​​​Although the traffic was bad, I arrived on time. (not In spite of the traffic was bad)
​In spite of the traffic, I arrived on time.

I couldn't sleep because of the mosquito ​although I was very tired.
I couldn't sleep because of the mosquito ​despite being very tired. (not despite I was tired)

​​​E. 때로 ​although대신 ​though를 사용한다:
I didn't get the job ​though I was well qualified.

구어에서는 문장의 끝에 ​though를 사용하기도 한다:
In spoken English we often use ​though at the end of a sentence:

I see her every day. I've never spoken to her, ​though. (= but I've never spoken to her)

​Even though (but not "even" alone)는 ​although보다 강한 형태이다.

​Even though I was really tired, I couldn't sleep because of the mosquito. (not Even I was really tired...)
